This van was built to be a capable off-road camper (while keeping road manners in mind), and most of the improvements are under the surface, so I refer to it as a "sleeper". I'm a former marine (boat) carpenter and electrician, so everything was built to marine standards. We have built 4 different trailers/truck campers/RV's over the years, and all of our past experience camping around California/Baja culminated in this buildout. We specifically chose components based on reliability and simplicity and the van functions well off road, but also as a "grocery getter" or beachmobile for around town. Hot water is always available (you don't even have to think about it), and the solar keeps the batteries topped off under most normal operational circumstances. The handling of the van has been greatly improved with the addition of the Van Compass Stage 4.3 shock kit with rear leaf springs (a $7,200 upgrade). The shocks are adjustable for different road conditions and they significantly improve the ride of the van, especially off road, towing and in crosswind situations. The additional weight of the conversion makes suspension modifications like this a "must do" in my opinion. We bought the van with around 40k miles, so the components have only been used for about 10k miles, and most was squeezed into a few trips. This is not a worn out conversion. The van is registered as a camper van with the CA DMV, so it's eligible for RV financing.
