This car offers a compelling opportunity to own, at areasonable price, something of a unicorn - Audi’s supercar with a gated sixspeed manual transmission and a folding roof. Of the 800 R8s sold in the US in 2012only 40 were manuals, and a smaller fraction of those were Spyders. The R8 isan iconic design that has changed little since its unveiling, people still stopand stare. I purchased this car for three reasons, and then added a fourth. Firstly,it has the desirable gated 6 speed shifter – offers the delightful clink of agood shift, almost as if a bell is being rung when you get it right. The shiftgate itself is art. The manual transmission brings out the best in the 4.2L V8engine, it is precise with a well-weighted clutch pedal. Secondly, the interiorcolor is not your normal German Car black. The combination of the burgundyleather and carbon fiber is fantastic, with the cabin being of the quality youwould expect. The chrome highlights set off both color schemes. Hard surfacessuch as buttons and carbon fiber are perfect. The seats themselves are in exceptionalcondition for a car with this mileage, I have tried to capture that in the photos.They are darker in person, the photography makes them look more red and lessburgundy than they actually are. The touch points on the car (seat, steeringwheel, armrests) are in excellent shape with few signs of wear. The interior isa pleasant place to be whether you are ripping it up or driving long distance. Thethird element is the convertible. Roof works seamlessly, and the ability to lowerthe rear windshield even with the roof still up is a great way to enjoy thesounds of the V8 when the weather does not cooperate. There are few compromiseswhen the roof is closed, no extra wind noise at all. No leaks. And lastly thesound…the car has a Quicksilver exhaust installed. People know you’re coming,and it sounds more Italian than German, with a vicious wail. The V8 revs toover 8,000 RPM and you can hear every revolution. Stock exhaust goes with thecar if you want to change it back.Since my purchase in Jan 2019 over $15,000 has been spent tobring the car up to standardMechanically everything functions as it should. Drive beltsreplaced at 77k miles. Major service Jan 2019 and Minor service July 2020. Freshoil and filters.New BC adjustable coilover suspension – replaces the guaranteedto fail Audi magnetic shocks. This is single biggest weakness of the R8s(replacement shocks are $3k a corner) and it has been permanently addressed. Carrides fantastically well. Only sign of change is the illumination of shock iconon dash. It does not trigger an error message but stays lit. There are modulesthat can be installed so the light goes out but it has never bothered me enoughto spend the $600. Quicksilver exhaust installed. Stock exhaust on hand. New Michelin Pilot Supersport tires and new TPMS sensors withless than 1000 miles. All four wheels refinished, no scrapes or scuffs. New AC compressor and AC lines. This is an engine-outprocess on this car.Hood repainted, black paint shows well on all surfaces.
